Allie’s Bat Mitzvah

Allie’s Bat Mitzvah was SO much fun to be apart of! Allie was surrounded by such a warm and genuine group of people, it was a real pleasure to witness. My favorite part of today though was when Allie’s dad totally surprised Allie by bringing in their two dogs to help her light the last candle on her cake! As with all my Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, it was a lively fun crowd and it was contagious! The reception was held at one of my favorite venues, The Stone House at Stirling Ridge, NJ. Congratulations Allie!

I love this moment between Allie and her Grandfather.

This is what happens when you tell a bunch of kids that the ice cream sundae bar is open! I’m just kidding, they were playing Coke and Pepsi.

Mark Beckelman - Todd — love the natural lighting. I’ve been trying to reverse-engineer your technique (which is difficult because it’s so seamless!) It appears that you are using all natural lighting, yet I know from experience that shooting fast moving Coke & Pepsi without some kind of flash results in subject blur (despite the daytime reception). Care to enlighten? (so to speak…)

Todd - Hi Mark. Thanks! I think there are 3 or 4 images in this blog post that use just available light (no flash). The rest were a combination of ambient and flash which was bounced off a ceiling or wall. That’s the key. With the bounce, you can get a more diffuse light source, and you can make it a more directional light source. Those two things, when done correctly, should result in a more natural lighting look. Hope that helps somewhat. Thanks again.

Mark Beckelman - Todd — thanks for sharing! So, are you bouncing from your single on-camera flash, or do you have multiple lights?
